PM Kakar says ‘will exercise powers on key national security matter’ DG ISI extension:

Anwaarul Haq Kakar, the caretaker prime minister (PM), declared on Thursday that he will use his constitutional authority to address the issue of the extension of the Director-General of the Inter-Services Intelligence (DG ISI) in the sake of national security, according to ARY News.

The decision to extend the DG ISI's term was a topic that Caretaker PM Anwaarul Haq Kakar declined to confirm or reject during an interview with the ARY News program "Khabar."

He said that the enlargement of the DG ISI is not an easy topic that could be discussed publicly.

The president said, "I'm going to use my [constitutional] powers for it." National security is a factor in the DG ISI's expansion.

According to PM Kakar, the caretaker administration would carry out all responsibilities in line with the law. He made suggestions that there might be elections soon, but he would not provide a definite date for the general elections.

PM Kakar asserts that the ECP has the authority to declare the election date.

"I have no legal defense for the election date. However, I can tell you that the caretaker administration will not carry out any unlawful activities, whether they last for a day or a month. The interim administration is safeguarded by national legislation.

The Pakistan People's Party (PPP) Chairman Bilawal Bhutto Zardari's objections were dismissed by PM Kakar. He said that the caretaker administration was constituted following compliance with all legal and constitutional procedures.

He further stated that he would not comment on the Council for Common Interests (CCI) decision.

The caretaker administration, according to PM Kakar, is simply reducing unlawful activity nationwide, not the value of the US dollar. After the authorities took steps to stop the unlawful operations, he anticipated that the USD may plummet below Rs250.

General elections may take place in the middle of January or by the end of the month, the caretaker prime minister indicated yesterday, but the ECP has the authority to choose the exact date.

The caretaker prime minister stated his opinions on a talk program of a private TV network, saying that the caretaker setup was prepared to support the electoral process, handle peace and order issues, and handle financial issues associated to conducting elections.

The president had also instructed the ECP that the delimitation was a proper and constitutional procedure, and the ECP will undertake discussions, he continued.
